JUST because you want a big zoom doesn’t mean you necessarily want a big camera. You don’t need an interchangeable lens camera to have versatile shooting options. A new breed of long-zoom lens cameras can now have you photographing a wide scene one minute, and zooming in on a distant subject the next, all without making vast compromises in image quality.
The cameras we’ll be looking at are:
THE Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 is a high-quality bridge camera with great image quality for its class. It gets you that DSLR feel and a versatile 16x optical zoom without risking getting lured into spending thousands on lenses.
It features a 20.1-megapixel 1-inch sensor; 16x 25-400 optical zoom; 2.36 million-dot OLED EVF; and a 3-inch variable angle display.
IF you need to capture sharp images and full-HD video clips in pretty much any lighting condition, with a vast focal range, you’d be hard pressed to find a more suitable shooter.
Featuring a dust and moisture-resistant body, adjustable aperture ring around the lens, fast and constant f/2.8 lens with large sensor, clean HDMI output for video recording, and excellent video capabilities.
The Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 combines aspects of two of the company’s most imagination-catching cameras; it can offer a balance of high image quality and long zoom in a sensibly sized package. In this case it means the RX10 is able to offer a 24-200mm equivalent F2.8 lens.
OLYMPUS Stylus 1, a high-end bridge camera featuring an electronic viewfinder, hot shoe, advanced Wi-Fi capabilities and, most important, a new i.Zuiko 10.7x optical zoom lens with a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture.
Its touch screen and electronic viewfinder are very nice, and its features and controls give it a dSLR feel.
The camera takes the TruePic VI image processor and 12-megapixel 1/1.7-inch BSI CMOS sensor of Olympus’ Stylus XZ-2 iHS and mates them with a 10.7x f2.8 28-300mm lens.
THE SX60 HS gets a four-megapixel resolution bump to 16 megapixels, and its 1/2.3-inch backside-illuminated CMOS sensor is paired with a newer Digic 6 image processor for better low-light results and improved performance all around. Photos can be captured in JPEG, raw, or JPEG plus raw.
Video capabilities have been beefed up. The camera can capture at up to 1080p at 60 frames per second and you can shoot in automatic or manually control exposure and an optional external stereo mic jack has been added. As with most recent PowerShots, Wi-Fi is built in, with photo sharing via Canon’s Image Gateway service.
SAMSUNG’S WB2200F is one of the most unusual-looking digicams . This 16.4-megapixel bridge camera packs a 60x optical ultra-zoom lens in a package that mimics those of high-end DSLRs used by pros.
This intentional DSLR-like two-grip design gives you a second set of controls when you turn the camera from landscape to portrait position; it’s also especially handy for keeping the camera stable in your when you’re zooming out to full telephoto
The lens also has a maximum aperture of f/2.8 at its widest setting, closing to f/5.9 at full stretch. Inside, there’s a 16.4MP backside illuminated 1/2.3in CMOS sensor, which outputs to a three-inch 460K-dot TFT LCD on the back, as well as a small electronic viewfinder that can be activated with the press of a button.
THE Nikon Coolpix S9700 is a 30x compact zoom that captures nice photos and video; it has very good shooting performance; and it has a full assortment of shooting modes from basic automatic to more creative options including full manual control.
It features a back-illuminated 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, 30x optical zoom, FullHD video and a 921,000 dot screen to watch them on. The amount of tech in this camera is enough to make a robot cry.
The S9700 is slim enough for most pockets, measuring 2.5 by 4.3 by 1.5 inches (HWD), and weighing just 8.2 ounces. Video quality is just as good as its photos — better in daylight than indoors or in low light.
